Unlearn That Phobia, Quickly!
Phobias are inappropriate irrational fears that interfere with daily life. Phobic responses are learned at times of distress, danger or fear; sometimes even when we are 'only' startled. We all know that few spiders are dangerous, and really, only in certain situations. But someone with a spider phobia feels various levels of real fear and powerful 'fight-or-flight' physical reactions in response to the merest thought, suggestion, picture or even the spoken word, "spider." A vivid encounter with any spider that fits the learned pattern, real or imagined, can provoke a raw physical reaction that includes sweating, racing heart, tight chest, dry throat, dizziness, and more - in short a full-blown panic attack. Because folks who have developed phobias tend to be very imaginative, the bad feelings can sometimes begin to generalize to other, seemingly unrelated things. The good news is that these accidents of emotional programming can often be unlearned in minutes.
Even though phobias are learned very quickly, they can last for years and even grow stronger with time (as we learn them better!). Learning to resolve phobias is simple and very effective. You can easily learn how to end your phobia by telephone. This may sound far-fetched, especially if you have suffered for years with a phobia. But if you genuinely intend to be rid of the habit, and practice the techniques regularly and with enthusiasm, you can be free of your phobic habit in no time. It is not at all uncommon for that bad old feeling to be permanently gone 45 minutes after we start to work on it.
This is by no means a guarantee. Because as the client, you are in complete control of how quickly and easily you resolve a phobia. I teach the methods and coach you through every step of the process. There can sometimes be other habits that are inaccurately called phobias. As you would expect, more complex habits can take more effort and time to sort it out and build a strategy to unlearn.
I have observed one pattern often enough to mention here. There are times, after unlearning a phobic response pattern, that a client is pestered by a recurring thought that "it might come back." While unpleasant, this is NOT the phobia; it is anxiety, that is, a negative emotional response to some future, imagined event. Left to fester this can cause problems, but again, this pattern is also very straight forward to unlearn.
